It was built in 1885 to replace the old temple, which was practically in ruins. The cathedral features a post-colonial structure with influences from Italian architecture and was designed by the renowned architect Pedro Coll. It is composed of five naves, making it one of only three structures of this kind still standing in South America.
The High Altar is Renaissance in style, while another altar is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Additionally, the fifteen polychrome wooden panels depict the Mysteries of the Rosary. Notably, the image of Our Lady of the Rosary is depicted seated, which is why she is affectionately known as “the Seated Virgin.”
